Gabrielle Union shared a candid post on Instagram Wednesday detailing her experience with mental health and her struggle with PTSD.

“As a rape survivor, I have struggled with PTSD for 30 years. Living with anxiety and panic all these years has never been easy,” Union wrote.

“Sometimes the anxiety is so bad that it cuts my life short. Leaving the house or turning left under uncontrolled lights would fill me with dread. Anxiety can change my anticipation of going to a party or fun event (the Met Ball) into pure misery,” she continued, demonstrating how common her anxiety is, even in moments that should be marked by excitement and joy.

Union went on to explain the importance of trusting and understanding those who live with anxiety without trying to “fix” them.

“When we tell you what we’re going through, please believe us when we first mention it. No, it’s not like being nervous, everyone experiences and deals with anxiety in different ways, and that’s okay. I don’t need you to try to ‘fix’ me,” she wrote.

She concluded with a statement of solidarity.

“I share this because I want everyone who lives with anxiety to know they are not alone or ‘extra. I see you, I feel you and have so much love for you. Always. Love and light to good people. Be there for each other good,” she wrote.

The comments were filled with supporters praising the coalition for speaking openly about her mental health.

“[Your] vulnerability amazes and inspires us,” one commenter shared.

“This is powerful, thank you for sharing,” wrote another.
